Chincoteague Island in Winter

Through the cold winter the promise of the warmth of spring and its brighter colors brings us back to the beach.

The Assateague ponies munch on the last dry winter grasses before the new green sprouts appear.

Soon it is warm enough to abandon winter coats.

The mares bring the season's young foals out to graze.

Mares and foals appear all over Assateague Island.

The ponies behave like children in the spring.

As the trees and grasses leaf out in the early spring, one is reminded of Robert Frost's lines, "Nature's first green is gold."

The island's summer inhabitants return from the south.

Soon it is full spring.

And we enjoy the wonders of nature and await the crowds of summer.
